Tarantula Hawks (also known as Tarantula Hawk Wasps) are neutral mobs that can be found in Desert and Badlands biomes.
Behavior[]
Tarantula Hawks will fight back if the player attacks one.
Tarantula Hawks will attack Spiders or threats using their erratic flying pattern and their sting, applying the Debilitating Sting effect in the process.
Spider Hunting[]
Tarantula Hawks will regularly attack Spiders by stinging them once with the Debilitating Sting effect causing the Spider to be paralyzed.
Afterwards the Tarantula Hawk will pick up the paralyzed Spider in its mandibles and proceed to drag it around for a while until the Tarantula Hawk will proceed to bury the Spider if and only if there are Sand blocks nearby. Otherwise, the Tarantula Hawk will attempt to sting the spider to death.
Taming[]
Tarantula Hawks can be tamed by feeding them Spider Eyes.
Tamed Tarantula Hawks can be set to three modes:
- Follow: Makes the Tarantula Hawk follow its owner.
- Stay: Makes the Tarantula Hawk stay in place.
- Wander: Makes the Tarantula Hawk walk around aimlessly.
If it's owner is attacked or if it's owner attacks something then the Tarantula Hawk will aid its owner in a fight. Due to the Debilitating Sting effect, Tarantula Hawks are very good at protecting their owner, especially from arthropods.
Tamed Tarantula Hawks can be healed with Flowers.
Breeding[]
Tamed Tarantula Hawks can be bred with Fermented Spider Eyes.
Feeding two tamed Tarantula Hawks some Fermented Spider Eyes causes them to enter love mode and eventually one of the Tarantula Hawks will be ready to spawn the baby.
Tarantula Hawks are parasitoids. Therefore, to spawn the baby, the Tarantula Hawk with the baby needs to attack another Spider. However, this time, it will lay a single invisible egg inside the Spider when it gets attacked. If there are Sand blocks nearby, one of the Tarantula Hawks will bury it the same way it normally buries spiders. After the sting effect runs out, the host spider dies and the baby Tarantula Hawk Grub will emerge. It will NOT be tamed automatically but can be tamed like normal.
Nether Tarantula Hawk[]
If a Tarantula Hawk Grub spawned in The Nether then it will take on a Nether variant when it grows up.

Trivia[]
- Many people agree that this mob along with the Crimson Mosquito are some of the most gruesome mobs in the mod.
- If the player goes to the area where a Spider has been buried or simply go in spectator mode, it is possible to see that the Spider is still alive.
- They are likely a reference to Fallout New Vegas and its cazadores which share a similar look too Tarantula Hawks. Additionally, both of their achievement names are references to the game.
- Tarantula Hawks are one of the few mobs that have a baby version of them that is vastly different to their grown form.
- When breeding Tarantula Hawks, if the host spider dies before the sting effect runs out, the baby Tarantula Hawk will not spawn.
- This usually does not happen unless there are no Sand blocks nearby because all Tarantula Hawks don't sting paralyzed Spiders with an egg inside. Therefore, it is recommended to keep Tarantula Hawks near Sand blocks. If that is not possible, the host spider must be kept away from mobs that would attack Spiders, especially Iron Golems and all other mobs that would otherwise kill the host spider.

Animal Dictionary Entry |

"Despite its name, the Tarantula Hawk is neither a spider nor a bird. They are giant, parasitoid wasps that are often found buzzing above Desert biomes. Although a terrifying sight, they have little interest in most creatures, and are neutral. Tarantula Hawks get their name from their favorite prey: they love to attack Spiders. They can often be seen swooping in to sting Spiders, only to fly around and come back once the prey has been completely immobilized by their sting. They will proceed to drag the Spider away and bury it underground. When attacking, the Tarantula Hawk can inflict the Debilitating Sting effect, which paralyses arthropods and damages non-arthropods until they are at half their usual health. Tarantula Hawks can be difficult to fight, since they have a very erratic flight pattern and sting frequently. Tarantula Hawks can be tamed by feeding them 15-25 Spider Eyes. They can prove to be a formidable defense against many monsters, and their sting is extremely beneficial when fighting Spiders or other arthropods. Two tamed Tarantula Hawks can be bred by feeding them Fermented Spider Eyes. Once bred, the wasps will seek out Spiders to paralyze - only this time, a baby Tarantula Hawk Grub will emerge from where the Spider is buried, after some time. Tamed Tarantula Hawks can be healed with Flowers. Tarantula Hawks bred in The Nether will have a yellow-orange color pattern. If a Tarantula Hawk is slain, it can drop a Tattered Tarantula Hawk Wing. Nine of these can be used to create a Tarantula Hawk Wing, which when two are crafted with an Elyra can render the Tarantula Hawk Elytra. This upgrade has 3 additional armor points, more durability, and is enchantable. Tattered Wings can also be used to create a unique banner pattern." |
