Spiked Scutes are miscellaneous items obtained from shearing Alligator Snapping Turtles.
Obtaining[]
Alligator Snapping Turtles have a 5% chance to drop one Spiked Scute once sheared of moss[1]. A turtle needs to spend 10 minutes in water for moss to grow on their shells. Once moss builds up on the turtle, the timer for growth resets and keeps ticking, meaning that any time spent with moss on its back will continue to count toward the 10 minute regrowth timer. Therefore, the player does not need to immediately shear the turtle to maximize drops; as long as the player shears it up to 10 minutes after moss has grown, no drop time is lost.
For farming spiked scutes, it's best to breed multiple turtles trapped in a shallow water enclosure to increase the chances of obtaining a Spiked Scute each shearing and to avoid being bitten while shearing.
