Raccoons are neutral mobs that can be found in Plains, Forest, Taiga and Meadow biomes.

Behavior[]

Raccoons will fight back if the player attacks one and will attack by biting.

During the night, the eyes of a Raccoon will glow.

Washing Food[]

If the player holds a food item near a Raccoon then it will start begging to be fed.

If a Raccoon obtains a food item, it will proceed to hold it in its mouth until it finds a Water Source where it will proceed to wash the food item underwater before eating.

If there is no Water Source nearby then the Raccoon will simply eat the food in its mouth.

Stealing[]

If a Raccoon finds a storage container like a Chest then it will steal any food items inside and eat them later. If no food items are around.

Raccoons will also try and steal items from Villagers, these items don't have to be food in order to be stolen.

Blue Jay Teaming[]

If the player feeds a Blue Jay some Glow Berries then also feeds a Raccoon some Glow Berries afterwards then the Raccoon will gain a Blue Jay which will remain on its back until the Raccoon attacks something, causing the Blue Jay to fight alongside it.

The Blue Jay can be removed by feeding it Glow Berries again.

Taming[]

Raccoons can be tamed by feeding them an Egg then letting the Raccoon wash it in Water.

Tamed Raccoons can be set to three modes:

  • Follow: Makes the Raccoon follow its owner.
  • Stay: Makes the Raccoon stay in place.
  • Wander: Makes the Raccoon walk around aimlessly.

If it's owner is attacked or if it's owner attacks something then the Raccoon will aid its owner in a fight. However, Raccoons are not very good fighters so it isn't recommended to do this.

Bandanas[]

Carpets of any color can be placed on a tamed Raccoon for decoration.

These carpets can be removed with Shears.

To change the color of the bandana, apply a new Carpet of the player's chosen color as using Dye doesn't work.

Breeding[]

Raccoons can be bred with Bread although this does have to be done by manually feeding the Raccoon as making the Raccoon wash it won't work.

Feeding two Raccoons some Bread causes them to enter love mode and eventually one of the Raccoons will spawn a baby Raccoon.

Baby Raccoons are not tamed at birth.

Trivia[]

  • Naming a Raccoon "Rigby" will give it a skin based off of the character of the same name in the TV series, Regular Show.
  • If a Raccoon attempts to wash Sugar in Water then the Sugar will dissolve as a reference to the YouTube video of a Raccoon washing cotton candy.
  • Blue Jays teaming up with Raccoons is a reference to Mordecai and Rigby in the TV series Regular Show.
  • If a player summons a Raccoon using /summon command, it will have the White Carpet equipped on them.

Animal Dictionary Entry
"Raccoons are small mammals native to Plains and Forests. Although neutral, they will beg for any food if seeing it held. They can often be identified at night due to their glowing eyes. Although it can be tempting to feed these cute animals, often times there is little benefit. The Raccoon is a known thief that often steals food out of Chests and Barrels, and, despite its adorable appearance, can be remarkably aggressive. One curiosity of the Raccoon is its "washing" behavior. When given food near Water, a Raccoon will wash the food item under Water, then eat it. Raccoons can only be tamed if given a Chicken's Egg near Water. where they can wash the egg as they see fit. Tamed Raccoons can be made to sit, follow and wander. They can be bred with Bread. Tamed Raccoons can be given a Carpet to wear as a Bandana, which can be removed with Shears. Occasionally, Raccoons can steal items from the inventories of Villagers. When slain, Raccoons have a chance to drop their tails. These tails can be used to make the Frontiersman's Cap, which grants a speed bonus when sneaking."
