Murmurs are hostile mobs that spawn rarely in Cherry Groves during night or in Caves beneath y level -30.

Behavior[]

Murmurs are aggressive and will attack by extending their neck which has a reach of 50 blocks, the head will then bite its target which can deal a lot of damage.

Murmurs will first extend their neck upwards to get a good look at their target before they actually attack.

If a Murmurs head or neck is hit then the damage received will be halved.

Despite being undead mobs, Murmurs are not affected by the undead pacification that Unsettling Kimonos grant the player.

Trivia[]

  • The inspiration of the Murmur comes down to two suspects: The first suspect is the Teacher from Little Nightmares II which has the ability to stretch its neck in a similar manner. The second suspect is the Rokurokubi which is a mythical Japanese neck stretching woman monster, known as a Youkai (although some Rokurokubi can also detach their heads and have them float around). [1]
    • Interestingly, the Murmurs sounds were taken from the Teacher in Little Nightmares II.
    • The reason why Murmurs spawn in Cherry Groves at night, is that Cherry Groves are a Japanese themed biome, and Murmurs are based on Japanese Folklore, which would effectively make sense for them to spawn there.
  • The Murmur is one of five mobs to have separate entities making up its body.
  • Murmurs also attack Villagers, this is probably due to the fact that Villagers, might be targets, or prey for Murmurs.

Animal Dictionary Entry
"The Murmur is a tortured soul that can only be found deep in the bowels of The Overworld, even deeper than Cave Centipedes. What appears to be a harmless person is actually an undead monster with a serpentine neck, which it can extend further than 50 blocks. When a Murmur spots prey, it will extend its neck upwards to get a good look, then sweep forwards quickly to bite its prey and quickly retreat. If a Murmur's head is hit rather than its body, it will only receive half of the damage. If slain, a Murmur can drop Red Wool, an Elastic Tendon, or rarely, an Unsettling Kimono. The Elastic Tendons can be combined with Dropbear Claws to create the Tendon Whip. This medium-range melee weapon can be swung like a sword, and will deal damage to up to three nearby mobs, with descending damage. It can be used from over 8 blocks away, and can automatically find a target. The whip can be repaired with Elastic Tendons. The Unsettling Kimono can work as a Chestplate. Although it has low armor and durability, it increases the wearer's placement distance by two blocks, and makes most undead hostile mobs neutral to their presence - except for other Murmurs and the Wither. It can be repaired with Wool. Although Murmurs can usually be found at great depths, they can also rarely appear at the surface in Cherry Groves."
