Mimic Octopuses are passive mobs that spawn in Warm Ocean biomes.
Behavior[]
Mimic Octopus can only live in Water and will slowly die if on land for too long, that is unless a Slimeball is used on a tamed Mimic Octopus to help it survive on land, although this is only temporary and it will need to be reapplied every 2 days.
Mimic Octopuses can be collected with a Water Bucket to obtain a Bucket of Mimic Octopus. Mimic Octopus placed in a bucket do not despawn naturally. When the bucket is used on a block it places Water along with the Mimic Octopus swimming next to it.
Camouflage[]
If a Mimic Octopus is on top of a block then it will mimic the colors of that block which also causes nearby predators such as Hammerhead Sharks or Mantis Shrimps to often ignore it.
If a Mimic Octopus is camouflaged it will also regain health.
Mimicking Other Mobs[]
A Mimic Octopus can also be seen mimicking either Creepers, Guardians or Pufferfish in an attempt to fool their predators.
Taming[]
Mimic Octopus can be tamed by feeding them Lobster Tails but only if they are not camouflaged.
Tamed Mimic Octopus can be set to three modes:
- Follow: Makes the Mimic Octopus follow its owner.
- Stay: Makes the Mimic Octopus stay in place.
- Wander: Makes the Mimic Octopus walk around aimlessly.
Using certain items on a tamed Mimic Octopus will force it to transform. None of these items get consumed when doing this:
- Gunpowder (For Creeper form)
- Prismarine Shard (For Guardian form)
- Prismarine Crystals (For Guardian form)
- Pufferfish (For Pufferfish form)
5-8 Mimicream can also be applied to a tamed Mimic Octopus to give it the ability to perform attacks using its mimicking ability. The abilities include:
- Creating small explosions in its Creeper form.
- Firing a laser beam at its target with its Guardian form.
- Stabbing its target with poisonous spikes while in its Pufferfish form.
If its owner is attacked or if its owner attacks something then the Mimic Octopus will aid its owner in a fight but only if Mimicream has been used on it. If not then the Mimic Octopus will attempt to scare off the threat by changing form.
Breeding[]
Tamed Mimic Octopuses can be bred with Tropical Fish.
Feeding two tamed Mimic Octopus some Tropical Fish causes them to enter love mode and eventually one of the Mimic Octopus will spawn a baby Mimic Octopus.
Trivia[]
- Mimic Octopuses are the second mimicking creature to be added in the mod, the first is the Mimicube

Animal Dictionary Entry |
---|
"The Mimic Octopus is a curious passive cephalopod found in Warm Oceans. Prey to many other animals, the Mimic Octopus relies on its rapid regeneration and its ability to change shape and color to survive. The octopus can change color to match any block it decides to, and is known to mimic Pufferfish, Creepers and Guardians if any are nearby. When mimicking a block, the creature is almost invisible to any predators. Mimic Octopi can be tamed by a player by feeding them five to eight Lobster Tails, but only when they are not actively camouflaged. Although naturally passive, tamed mimics will attempt to scare any would-be attackers of their owners by changing form, often into a monster. Once tamed, the Octopus can follow its owner onto land, but one must note that they can dry out in this toxic environment. A Slimeball can be applied every few days in order to nullify this. By interacting with a tamed Mimic Octopus with an Ink Sac, one can toggle whether or not it should randomly change form. By using a Prismarine Shard on an Octopus, it can remember and take the form of a Guardian. The same is true for Pufferfish and Creeper drops. None of these 'reminders' consume the item. Like other tameable creatures, these octopi can be commanded to sit, wander or follow. If one applies five to eight Mimicream to a Mimic Octopus, it can learn to not only mimic the shape of creatures, but their abilities in combat. These octopi can shoot beams as Guardians, stab with poison spikes as Pufferfish, and explode as Creepers. Tamed Mimic Octopi can be bucketed, and bred with Tropical Fish. One should make sure not to keep any Mimic Octopi near any sharks or Mantis Shrimps, their natural predators" |
