Mantis Shrimps are neutral mobs that spawn in Warm Ocean and Mangrove Swamp biomes.

Behavior[]

Mantis Shrimp can only live in Water and will slowly die if on land for too long, that is unless a Water Bucket is given to a tamed Mantis Shrimp to help it survive on land.

Mantis Shrimps will fight back if the player attacks one. If the player provokes one then the Mantis Shrimp will use its fists to set the target on fire upon hit.

Mantis Shrimps will attack mobs such as Tropical Fish, Squid, Glow Squid, Mimic Octopuses, Guardians, Catfish and even Shulkers.

Taming[]

Mantis Shrimps can be tamed by feeding them Tropical Fish.

Tamed Mantis Shrimps can be set to four modes:

  • Follow: Makes the Mantis Shrimp follow its owner.
  • Stay: Makes the Mantis Shrimp stay in place.
  • Wander: Makes the Mantis Shrimp walk around aimlessly.
  • Breaking Blocks: Makes the Mantis Shrimp look out for blocks identical to the one in its hand to break them.

If it's owner is attacked or if it's owner attacks something then the Mantis Shrimp will aid its owner in a fight. Due to the fire effect their fists can create, Mantis Shrimps are very good at protecting their owner.

Tamed Mantis Shrimps can be healed with any kind of fish.

Breaking Blocks[]

It is possible to give an item to a tamed Mantis Shrimp by sneak right-clicking and the Mantis Shrimp will begin holding the item.

If this item is a block then a Mantis Shrimp can be put into the breaking blocks mode which will make them search for the block they are holding. Once they find one the Mantis Shrimp will break it using their fists.

If a Mantis Shrimp is set to breaking blocks mode while they are not holding a block then they will start to wander aimlessly.

Breeding[]

Mantis Shrimps can be bred with Lobster Tails.

Feeding two tamed Mantis Shrimps some Lobster Tails causes them to enter love mode and eventually one of the Mantis Shrimps will spawn a baby Mantis Shrimp.

Trivia[]

  • When this mob was first added, many people complained about its size.
  • The zebra variant is exclusive to the Mangrove Swamps.
  • The reason why Mantis Shrimps attack Shulkers is because real-world Mantis Shrimp typically eat mollusks and Shulkers typically resemble them.

Animal Dictionary Entry
"Mantis Shrimp are giant crustaceans found in the reefs of the Warm Oceans, or in Mangrove Swamps. These giant shrimp are equipped with two powerful fists, which can move fast enough to burn their prey. These fists can also move fast enough to launch enemies back and break through blocks. Although neutral, it would not be wise to anger them. The Mantis Shrimp is a clever predator of Tropical Fish, Squid, Guardians, and above all else, Shulkers, their favorite delicacy. Mantis Shrimp can be tamed by feeding them 10 to 30 Tropical Fish. If a Mantis Shrimp is out of Water for more than 5 minutes, it will begin to dry out. This can be prevented by giving tame Mantis Shrimp Water Buckets when sneaking, so they can live out of the Water indefinitely. Tamed Mantis Shrimp can be made to follow, sit, wander and break blocks. When sneak-interacted with while holding a block, one can give this block to the Mantis Shrimp. The shrimp will then seek out and break any blocks matching the one held in its fist, if ordered to do so. Mantis Shrimp can be healed with any kind of fish when injured, and can be bred with Lobster Tails."
