Laviathans are passive mobs that can be found in the Nether's lava seas.
Behavior[]
Laviathans are capable of moving on land along with swimming in lava. The obsidian variant can additionally swim in water. Laviathans are able to crawl over flat land very slowly
Crimson Mosquito Luring[]
Laviathans will hunt crimson mosquitoes by breaching the surface of the lava then proceeding to expel smoke out of its back to lure any crimson mosquitoes towards it before snapping them up with its beaked mouth.
Obsidian Variant[]
If a Laviathan makes contact with Water then it will transform into an obsidian variant, which has 30 armor points (up from 10) and the ability to swim in water.
Taming[]
Laviathans can be tamed by equipping both a straddlite saddle and a straddlite tack on one.
Laviathans equipped with both of these are less likely to flee.
Tamed laviathans can be used to cross vast distances of lava with ease and up to four players can ride one.
Laviathans can be healed with magma cream.
Breeding[]
Laviathans can be bred with crimson mosquito larvae.
Feeding two laviathans some crimson mosquito larvae causes them to enter love mode and eventually a baby laviathan will spawn.

- The advancement "Loch-Nether-Monster!" is a heavy reference to the loch ness monster in Scotland, a fictional cryptid/animal that brought the inspiration to the laviathan.

| "Laviathans are gigantic, magmatic reptiles covered in Blackstone found within the Nether's great Lava Lakes. Although fearsome in appearance, Laviathans are completely passive, and attempt to flee if injured. Laviathans can be ridden and controlled by crafting and equipping both a Straddlite Saddle and a Straddlite Tack. The Saddle allows up to four passengers, and the tack allows one to control the movement of the Laviathan with long reins. Laviathans equipped with bot are less likely to flee and submerge in Lava. Laviathans are known for being one of the most successful predators of Crimson Mosquitoes, often breaching the surface of Lava and emitting smoke from vents on their backs and heads. This smoke lures the insects, who are then quickly snapped up in the beak of the Laviathan. Being creatures of a lava-y consistency, one would expect these giant reptiles to be harmed by Water. But it is now believed that when exposed to Water, these beasts "solidify" into a stronger, obsidian form. Laviathans can be bred with Crimson Mosquito Larvae and healed with Magma Cream." |
