(Not to be confused with Raw Catfish or Cooked Catfish)
Catfish are passive mobs that spawn underwater in River and Swamp biomes.
Behavior[]
Catfish can only live in Water and will slowly die if on land for too long.
Catfish comes in three size variants: Small, Medium and Large. The small and medium variants spawn in both Rivers and Swamps while the large variant only spawns in Swamps.
Sea Lanterns can be used to lure Catfish if the player holds one.
Catfish can be collected with a Water Bucket to obtain either a Bucket of Small Catfish, Bucket of Medium Catfish or Bucket of Large Catfish, the type the player gets depends on the size of the Catfish. Catfish placed in a bucket does not despawn naturally. If the Catfish has an item or mob in its belly, it will keep it when bucketed. When the bucket is used on a block it places Water along with the Catfish swimming next to it.
Transporting Items or Mobs[]
Small or Medium Catfish will store items inside their stomachs. Small Catfish can only store three stacks of items while Medium Catfish can store up to nine stacks.
Large Catfish won't store items and will instead store any small mobs that have a hitbox smaller than a full block. Large Catfish can only store one mob inside their stomachs.
Catfish can be made to spit out these items or mobs by either attacking them or feeding them Sea Pickles.
Catfish can digest mobs in their stomach after 3-2 days
When a large Catfish doesn't have food in its stomach and sees one, it usually swims after it for a while and then leaves it, but if it really wants it, it doesn't focus on anything else but the victim.
Trivia[]
- If a Catfish is attacked, then its eyes will open until the red flash disappears.
- Many people find this addition hilarious.
- Since Catfish can technically hold items in their bellies, they are classified as storage units. This means they won't despawn in unloaded chunks. As such, they can cause lag if there are too many of them in one place.
- It is quite scary that a big Catfish can eat even a small villager.

"Catfish are lethargic fish found in Swamps and Rivers. Although Catfish from Rivers can become quite hefty, only the largest of these fish can be found in Swamps. Being bottom feeders, Catfish are not picky with their food. Small and Medium Catfish will attempt to vacuum up any item that they see. Large Catfish instead will attempt to eat any mob shorter than a block. Small Catfish can only store 3 stacks of items in their bellies, whereas Medium Catfish can store 9. Large Catfish can only have 1 mob in their belly at a time. Catfish will regurgitate any item or mob they've eaten if injured or if they encounter a Sea Pickle, since they hate the taste of Pickles. Although they have poor vision, something about the flashing light of a Sea Lantern draws in Catfish. These can be used to lure Catfish to areas with or without items. All Catfish, even the large ones, can be captured with a Water Bucket. The contents of the fish's belly will be preserved, so one can effectively use Catfish to transport items or a mob by bucketing them after feeding. Catfish that have eaten items or have been bucketed will not disappear." |
